Police seek suspect in Augusta home invasion, sex assault

Police are asking for help in their search for a registered sex offender accused of assaulting a couple during a home invasion Saturday.

According to a news release, Johnny Baker III, 38, entered a home about 2:30 a.m. in the Mars Trailer Park, in the 3600 block of Deans Bridge Road, and physically assaulted a man and sexually assaulted a woman. Police said Baker also lives at the park.

Baker is wanted for rape, kidnapping, burglary, aggravated battery and aggravated sodomy.

According to The Augusta Chronicle archives, Baker has a history of criminal activity.

Baker was on parole for a Jefferson County aggravated assault charge from 1994 when he was arrested on a peeping Tom violation at the Augusta Mall in 2004. An incident report stated a police officer’s wife witnessed Baker, an employee at the mall, on this hands and knees looking under a stall in the women’s restroom. A young woman was in the stall at the time.

In 2007, Baker was on probation when he was charged with four counts of child molestation and two counts misdemeanor battery. The indictment alleged Baker fondled and beat two girls, according to previous reports.

He was sentenced to five years in prison on two reduced charges of felony sexual battery. According to the Georgia Department of Corrections, Baker’s incarceration ended in April 2012.
