No danger found in Aiken vehicle

A suspicious vehicle at an Aiken County hotel that prompted federal, state and local authorities to investigate Thursday was later deemed safe by bomb technicians.

Sheriff’s officials were sent to Country Inn & Suites, 3270 Whiskey Road, around 8:20 a.m. after someone reported a Ford Expedition with two gas cans and an oxygen tank underneath it.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, the Aiken Department of Public Safety, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the FBI closed down a portion of Whiskey Road and put Chukker Creek Elementary on soft lockdown as a precaution.

SLED’s bomb squad determined there was no threat from the vehicle.

According to a news release, the vehicle’s owner, an out-of-town construction employee, told police he left the canisters under the vehicle because they weren’t allowed at the work site.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Feemster said Monday’s terrorist bombing in Boston did not affect the way officials responded.

“We’ve always responded this way,” he said. “We remain vigilant.”
