An Augusta woman who worked with students in Columbia County’s 4-H program has been charged with having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Jennifer Gayle Davenport, 26, of the 1300 block of Baker Avenue, has been held without bond at the Columbia County Detention Center since her arrest Monday, according to jail records.

Davenport is charged with aggravated child molestation and aggravated sexual battery. The girl’s mother told Columbia County sheriff’s investigators that she discovered her daughter “had been involved in a sexual relationship” with Davenport, according to Capt. Steve Morris and an incident report.

Davenport was employed by Career Services, Columbia County’s temporary services contractor, said County Administrator Scott Johnson.

A message left requesting information about her employment with Career Services was not immediately returned.

Davenport performed hourly work for about a year as a program assistant for 4-H with the Columbia County Extension Service, said Shirley Williamson, the county coordinator for 4-H.

“She quit working here to find full-time employment about three weeks ago,” Williamson said. “The incident was not at a 4-H event and was out in the community somewhere, and I do not even know what child is involved,” or whether the teen was a participant in 4-H.

Morris said Davenport was the teen’s 4-H adviser and said the incidents occurred at the girl’s residence.

“She worked a few hours a week,” Williamson said. “A lot of work she did was here in the office. She did a lot of work with the kids who were in the office, but we’re very highly discouraged from being alone with a child at any time.”

All 4-H personnel must undergo a background check by the University of Georgia, which operates the service, and in addition to passing that check Davenport had been screened by Career Services, Williamson said.

my.voice pump the brakes on that comment. Lets keep the hyperbolic accusatory rhetoric to a minimum. Or at least until we know all the facts. I am in no way defending the accused in this story. But I am saying be careful when accusing 4-H a group that has done many good things for our youth.

Judgment

It is natural to assume that because a person has been charged with a crime they are automatically guilty, especially a crime such as this. I've done it, read a story, made an assumption, and have felt so angry and disgusted. But I make every effort, however, to keep those thoughts to myself and refrain from trying a person in the media such as this forum. People really need to stop doing this and if I had my way, there would be no such venue to judge others. There are always 2 sides to every story and of course in a case such as this, how could it be anything but true? Because sometimes the defendant is actually innocent. Praying for all involved that the truth will be the real judge under God's direction.

Yes, I've learned the hard

Yes, I've learned the hard way that negative comments should be prefaced with "If this is true", or "if they are guilty". I don't always succeed because some cases are pretty obvious; but ones like the above do leave it open for question.

@Poe - 4H wasn't arrested. No accusations made, a request to find others was suggested.

Your comment of, "where there is one there are more" clearly insinuates 4-H. If this was not your intention then maybe some clarification was needed on your part, as I was not the only commenter who interpreted your comment this way.

my.voice's comment is speculation and suggestive in nature!

It is clearly stated in the story that it is not known if the actions of Ms. Davenport were associated with her job at the 4-H. Let's wait and see before we judge anyone or anything!

I didn't think you were blaming 4-H from your post. The article made it very clear that they did an extensive background check. I think someone is close to 4-H and is taking the comments personally.

By the way, preferential child molesters have an average of over 50 victims before getting caught. This may have been her first, but I'm with you on your first comment.

(Why, yes, I do have extensive training and experience working with child molesters and victims.)

I agree with whyme. Also, I

I agree with whyme. Also, I hope it isn't a true accusation because that would mean, as others mention, that it is likely there are other victims. Praying for the truth to come out and justice according to law to be served.

If I was the victim's mother, I would be more concerned that my daughter was having sex with another female, or at least a sexual encounter. But if the perp is seeking female companionship, she is in the right place.

In the right place? Hardly. Columbia County 4H is an outstanding organization.
Again, let me say that the "freedom of speech" that we all enjoy these days can do such a disservice to many entities. In the olden days you discussed your opinions amongst yourselves when you read an article in the paper, but now these thoughts are even more emotionally charged, and usually not in a good way, because people anonymously write whatever they feel, caring not who gets hurt in the process. I'd like to think we as Augusta citizens are better than those who post distasteful comments on national websites...because they can...but I'm afraid we're not much better. Not just in this case but in most others. It's like someone just has to put an opposing, and usually disrespectful, comment on these forums for fun. This includes motor vehicle accidents ("I bet he was drunk!), teenage arrests ("she should be banned from school forever for engaging in that sort of behavior!"), and incidents involving the mentally ill ("why aren't these crazies locked up?"). Just because you can say it, doesn't mean you should. Here's hoping you or a loved one are never a victim nor a defendant..and if you are, never get on the computer...

Jennifer

My daughter has worked with Jennifer on a number of 4H projects. My family is standing by Jennifer and 4H. We live in America where we are innocent until PROVEN guilty. This could be a simple case of mean and vindictive parent who is jealous of her daughter receiving time and attention from a Godly young lady who has done nothing but instill leadership values within this county's youth. Shame on all those with ignorant and blind comments convicting her before she is even given a chance to speak. I was under the impression that we are an advanced society and have moved passed the "string em up and let God sort em out later" philosophy. How many times have we seen good people ruined by false accusations? When it involves children, we automatically assume guilt. I know that too often this is the case but it isn't up to the media or public as a whole to make this decision, it's up to judges and jury's. Back off of 4H! This is a group that has made a difference in the lives of children for over a hundred years! Google 4H alumni and you will be very surprised to see who has gone through this program.

i am surprised the LGBT community isn't marching in support of this woman...after all she was only "showing love to this young girl, she was not hurt or assualted" because if the young girl allowed this to happen then she must be born a lesbian-becaause as the gays put it gay or straight isn't a personal choice you are born one way or the other....well gay community???

People I know who know this

People I know who know this person and her family are shocked by this. Let's get all the details first. One person's accusation needs to be investigated before this gal is pronounced guilty.

Let's get all of the facts out there. I'm a product of 4-H, and I THINK I turned out alright (of course the Earth was still cooling, when I was in 4-H). The dust might need to settle a little on this one.

critical thinking?

I'm sure that it is easy to make the assumption that because she is being held without bond she must be guilty. And for the record, I'm a pretty smart cookie who has no problem with critical thinking and common sense. I have to use it every day in my particular line of work and I don't miss the mark much. Unlike many people on here, however, I do not make assumptions solely on what I read, even on my job, because to do so would be detrimental to the people with whom I work. I have to look at all of of the facts, both sides of the situation, and then make an educated decision. Concercitizen, I only hope that you don't end up either in the situation that Ms. Davenport finds herself in or have to receive services where people are not as discerning as myself and my coworkers...and will you be able to handle the kinds of comments that people so easily make about you without knowing all of the facts? No matter the outcome of the case, I stand by my original statements that it is not fair to anyone who appears in the news anymore for any reason-crimes, deaths, job successes, fame-because the public enjoys anonymously posting disrespectful comments...because they can...

And ccreekfam5, well-written. I know about what you are writing...

Wow what a difference "sex" makes. Or the sex of the accused.

My son was falsely accused of the same type of crime. I read over 100 responses to his arrest and placement in the "Jail Report"-sick paper indeed-, and I was amazed at how many would just as soon take a rope and hang the dirty bastard or "bury him under the jail" etc...but in this case in which a 4-H woman, or better stated, a woman who has in her past had connections with the 4H clubs of America...., everyone seems to be coming to her defense. Why is this? We as a society are so easy to jump to a conclusion on these cases. There was some pretty hefty evidenturary things stated from the cell phone messages that were allegedly sexual in nature and reported to come from her phone to her daughter....what happened to them? I and my family are so worried about the outcome of this while the person who accused him of the deed pays nothing and really has to endure nothing, just hand to the lie... Meanwhile, my son is out of work, lost his job, will soon loose his home where he is raising his children whom he has custody of as a responsible adult after his irresponsible wife left him for another man and now has kids with that other man. A court saw fit to give my son, a responsible citizen, custody of his precious children for whom he loves more than life itself. These accusations may rip them from their caring father and imprison him as well as send them off to that person the courts did not want them with. He may also lose his life as men incarcerated that can't see their children don't take kindly to child molesters in prison, even if they are there on false allegations which resulted in a conviction. No evidence, no witnesses which would be required in a murder trial...yep, just 12 jurors who make a guess as to who they want to believe....he said she said... if there is no real evidence then you must acquit. What in the hell has happened to innocent until proven guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt?
