A judge set a $100,000 bond on Wednesday for a Hephzibah woman facing a murder charge in the death of her severely disabled son.

Mercer Special

Angela Mercer, 43, initially was charged with concealing a death after Richmond County sheriff’s deputies found the mummified body of her son, 23-year-old Robin Adams Jr.

After extensive investigation by medical examiners in Georgia and Tennessee, Mercer was indicted last month on a felony murder charge of murder by medical neglect.

Assistant District Attorney Rex Myers said Wednesday during the Richmond County Superior Court bond hearing that concerned
family members discovered Adams’ body on Oct. 12 and called the sheriff’s office.

Adams had been unable to walk, talk or take any action on his own because of genetic and medical conditions, Myers said. He was completely dependent on his mother.

Autopsies revealed Adams’ remains weighed 12 pounds. At the time he died – an exact time cannot to determined – Adams wore only a soiled adult diaper, Myers said. The medical examiners reported he died of severe malnutrition and that he suffered from advanced dental decay that would have made chewing excruciatingly painful, he said. Investigators believe his last medical treatment was in 2004.

Adams’ medical condition would not account for the severe malnutrition and he could have lived a normal life span with proper care, Myers said.

When questioned, Mercer told investigators that Adams died in February 2012 and she didn’t tell anyone because she was afraid she would be blamed, Myers said. She continued to cash
Adams’ Social Security disability checks.

Public defender Katherine Mason asked Chief Judge J. Carlisle Overstreet to set bond for Mercer because she needs her help with the extensive trial preparation that will be necessary. Mercer has no previous felony record, and her family was willing to help her post bond, Mason said.

At the prosecutor’s request, Overstreet added a special condition: Mercer will not be allowed to work as a health care assistant.

Mean looking

need I say more. YES.

There are a lot questions still to be answered.

Was he just a source of Disability Income for these people?
Where did his government disability and care money go?
Why wasn't he visited by an State or ARC agency employee to check on living conditions?

Special Place

Ms. Mercer, there is a special place in Hell for people like you. And it is my sincere wish that a jury helps you get to that place, as quickly as humanly possible. To starve your own son -- you look pretty "healthy" to me. And then once you have taken his life by neglect and starvation, you continue to cash his disability checks. What a piece of scum you are !! PLEASE let me get a Jury Summons !!!

How could anyone participate

How could anyone participate in a defense for this woman? I know this is America and one is innocent until proven guilty, but this case was a smoking gun. The Atlanta educators who supposedly participated in a cheating scandal were treated with less humanity.

How this so called Mother can

How this so called Mother can live with herself after what she did to her own flesh and blood just blows my mind. 12 pounds is all that poor child weighed. And then she was cashing his checks and spending his money. What a heartless so called monster she is. I hope she pays and pays dearly. They need to hang his pictures up in her cell so she can look at him for the rest of her life. Maybe she will eventually feel bad for what she has done to her poor baby
