Augusta man, 63, charged with stealing from ex-employer

BOBBY LEE GREEN

An Augusta man, 63, is charged with stealing more than $100,000 in compressed gas cylinders from his previous employer and reselling them to area recycling centers.

Richmond County sheriff’s Investigator Kendall Brown said Bobby Lee Green, of the 3600 block of Columbine Drive, took 268 cylinders from Air Liquide, 1311 New Savannah Road, over about seven months.

Police said the suspect broke into the business, used a blowtorch to cut open the aluminum cylinders and then resold them to recycling centers. The cylinders were valued at $105,700.

Brown said Green had been an employee at Air Liquide until he was terminated and arrested in 2009 for a similar theft at the plant.

Green is facing 22 felony counts of theft by taking and two counts of misdemeanor theft by taking. He was booked into the Richmond County jail Tuesday on five counts. Brown said the remaining charges are being pursued by the District Attorney’s Office.
