4 Richmond County sheriff's officers receive awards from MADD

Four Richmond County sheriff’s officers were honored Thursday for their work targeting drunken drivers.

The 2013 Golden Shield awards were given at the ninth annual law enforcement appreciation banquet held in Atlanta by the Georgia chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, according to a news release.

Deputy Hoy Darling was awarded the Hero Award for 292 driving under the influence arrests in 2013.

Deputies Bert Gates and William Geisen and Cpl. Bonnie Williams were recognized for excellence in job performance.

Also at the ceremony, Georgia State Patrol Post 25 in Grovetown was named GSP post of the year.

Trooper First Class Chris Niehus was named officer of the year.
