A man who served 20 years in prison for burglary and child molestation is back in court this week facing new charges of attempted child molestation.

Michael L. Brewer, 49, is accused of sending lurid electronic messages in 2011 and 2012 while he was in state prison.

Brewer has pleaded not guilty to the two counts against him, and his Richmond County Superior Court trial began Monday. The trial is in Augusta because the children lived in Richmond County when they reportedly received messages from Brewer.

The messages at first seemed innocuous but became disgusting, testified a high school student who was 14 or 15 when she received messages from Brewer on her Facebook page and personal e-mail.

A second girl was 9 or 10 when she received similar messages. She testified that Brewer also repeatedly called her home. She remembered one such call during which Brewer told her that he would be coming to live with her family soon and that they would play games at night after everyone else was asleep.

Testimony continues today. The jury will hear about Brewer’s previous convictions for burglary and child molestation and about letters he wrote to the victim in that case after he began serving his 20-year prison sentence in 1993.

According to reports in The Augusta Chronicle at the time of Brewer’s arrest in 1992, he was peeping into the bedroom window of two small girls before breaking into the house and getting on top of one child after he removed his pants. Brewer was considered a suspect in a number of peeping Tom incidents that occurred in his Hephzibah neighborhood before his arrest.

From prison? Listen, This

From prison? Listen, This character needs his urge eliminated. Call it what it is, he's out of control, so get him under control.

Secondly, I'd make the punitive payback possession of a phone in prison so terrible you'd only do it once.

I know, I know, don't dare harm his rights. His rights aren't what I would target. He sure has heck wouldn't be sitting around watching television.
