sayRichmond County authorities arrested a fourth suspect in an interstate motor vehicle theft ring Thursday.

Vernon Jerome Neely Sr., 66, was charged with three counts each of theft by receiving stolen property and theft by deception. His bond was set at $34,200, according to a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office booking report.

Authorities already had arrested Joseph Clayton Thaxton, Vernon Jerome Neely Jr. and Elmer Howard Gilman on felony charges following an investigation into car thefts.

Authorities in Richmond and Columbia counties started an investigation into a shop at 4040 Belair Road, near Jimmie Dyess Parkway, after discovering it wasn’t operating with a valid business license.

The investigation found that four men were using an unmarked roll-back truck to steal disabled vehicles across the area. The vehicles were then sold to local recycling and salvage yards.
