Charged with hiding on a train for the purpose of stealing a ride were William Robert Jackson, 26, of Graham, Wash.; Jayson Arthur Willard, 23, of Williamston, Mich.; Dennis James Kist, 24, of Okeana, Ohio; Megan Rose Tuck, 23, of Fort Worth, Texas; Jo Ann Heilberg, 23, of Florida; and Heather Bermudez, 23, of New Hampshire.

They were being held in the Columbia County Detention Center on Monday on $1,100 bond, according to jail records.

All six are listed as homeless in a report from the Grovetown Police Department.

They had hopped a CSX train in Atlanta with the intention of traveling to Savannah on St. Patrick’s Day weekend, according to the report, and were discovered aboard by a CSX police officer shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday when the train stopped in Grovetown near the 300 block of Railroad Avenue.

They were turned over to Grovetown police, and four dogs traveling with them were turned over to Columbia County Animal Services.

All four large-breed dogs appeared to be well-taken care of and had up-to-date rabies vaccinations, said Linda Glasscock, the animal services manager.

The travelers were carrying ample amounts of dog food in their backpacks, she said.

A relative of Willard plans to travel to the shelter to pick up his dog, Glasscock said, and the others will be caged until their owners are released from jail.

Well, besides the "someone's

Well, besides the "someone's baby" thing, I hate to see it because now WE have to house and feed these folks. I know they were caught committing a crime, but it sounds like they were just moving through the area and hitching a ride on the train was their mode of transportation. I know..I know...it doesn't make it right.
Think of it this way....what would Sheriff Andy Taylor do?? He'd just send them on their way, WITH their dogs!
I just hope and pray these girls don't get pregnant on one of these adventures.

Hoping freights is risky! I bet if one of them had been hurt there would be 10 lawyers seeking to sue!

carcraft has it right on why

carcraft has it right on why they don't allow train rides; but like the others, I would send them on to be someone else's thorn in the side. We've detained them and when they finally get cut loose will probably set up shop here. They can hop the next freight back to Atlanta as far as I'm concerned if this is the lifestyle they choose.

Just hitching a ride...

So, some laws aren't worth enforcing? It's ILLEGAL to "hitch a ride" on a train. Someone is paying good money to move their goods, why should someone be allowed to "hitch a ride?" Say you were out of town and they decided to break into your house to get something to eat, shower/bathe, and maybe sleep in your bed? No harm, no foul, right? And just like carcraft said, if one got hurt or killed, lawyers would come out of the woodwork. If they wanted to get to Savannah, they could have paid for a bus trip. They gambled and they lost.

Go to sleep you weary

Go to sleep you weary hobo
Let the towns drift slowly by
Can't you hear the steel rails hummin'
That's the hobo's lullaby

I know your clothes are torn and ragged
And your hair is turning gray
Lift your head and smile at trouble
You'll find peace and rest someday

Now don't you worry 'bout tomorrow
Let tomorrow come and go
Tonight you're in a nice warm boxcar
Safe from all that wind and snow

I know the police cause you trouble
They cause trouble everywhere
But when you die and go to Heaven
You'll find no policemen there

So go to sleep you weary hobo
Let the towns drift slowly by
Listen to the steel rails hummin'
That's a hobo's lullaby

Transients, Hoboes, Bums, and Now, Lawbreakers

Six twenty-somethings....what I would like to know is, how did six young people from different states end up together? I guess their parents and families are sooooooooo proud.............I don't believe dogs are allowed on River St. in Savannah, especially with so many people down there.

And no, my conclusions do not make me feel better, nor does your comment. Your comment makes me fear for our future as a country.

Do you plan to go and help these hapless vagrants or are you just the typical lib who thinks the taxpayers need to pick up the ticket, pun intended?

The fact is, KSL, taxpayers

The fact is, KSL, taxpayers are picking up the tab... Columbia county taxpayers right now. My observation was that you certainly jumped to conclusions based on no evidence whatsoever. No respectable social work program would have trained you in that uncanny skill.

Good to know

... the Grovetown cops have so little to do they can also double up as railroad bulls! Every meeting of the town council they pass another tax, surcharge, levy, assessment, fee, use tax, license fee, and we're to believe it's for public safety.

Apparently, there is no crime and all the assault BB gun owners have been rounded up, so there is nothing for them to do. Time for some layoffs, methinks!

Ok , pal

You just condemned the State of GA DEFACS. They are they are responsible for my training.

I will add that I was picked to be one of 8 for a GA regional training program for future social workers put on during the summer before I graduated from college.

By the way, we were trained by a person picked by the state of ga who had a masters in social work and did nothing else but train us.

Hobos

Well, judging by their appearance, I'm sure they smell alot better now that they are in jail.

I always wanted to try that.

Too late in my life now. My wife would kill me and you could read about my murder on these pages.

I guess that ship has sailed. (Freight trains and sailing ships??) Is that some kind of mixed metaphor?? Oh well....

CSX police made the arrest

dstewartsr: CSX police made the arrests, and turned the six over to the Grovetown police. That's in the story. Also, we're not aware of any additional "tax, surcharge, levy, assessment, fee, use tax, license fee" from Grovetown City Council. Do you have a source?

glaring absence

I noticed that nowhere in the article was anything said about drugs or weapons. I did notice that the dogs had ample food, rabies shots, and were well taken care of. Appears that the "hobos' had their priorities right in regard to the animals.
