A Hephzibah man scheduled to stand trial Monday on a charge of rape chose to plead guilty to a reduced charge.

The plea to aggravated assault with intent to rape resulted in a 10-year prison sentence for William B. Noggle, 33.

Noogle will have another 10 years on probation once he is released from prison. He was taken into custody after the guilty plea was entered in Richmond County Superior Court.

Assistant District Attorney Natalie Paine said Noggle was arrested for assaulting a woman Jan. 31, 2011. The two had once had a relationship but on the day of the offense they did not. Noggle grabbed the victim by the throat and ripped her shirt off during the assault, during which she cried and repeatedly said no, Paine said.
