Man finds his tax refund went to someone else

  • Follow Crime & courts

An Augusta man found out he’d been shortchanged after filing his tax return.

The 75-year-old told Richmond County authorities Thursday that he had filed his taxes in early January and was alerted that someone had already received the refund of about $3,100 using his name, according to a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

The man said he hadn’t given anyone permission to use his information and would prosecute if a suspect is identified.

A "return" is the piece of paper you fill out and file with the IRS. A "refund" is money you get back from the IRS if you paid too much in withholding or estimated taxes. Headline writer, wake up!!
