The area’s former regional director of the Department of Family and Children Services pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor child abuse charge Wednesday.

Sharonika Wimberly, 34, was sentenced in Richmond County Superior Court to 12 months’ probation and fined $500. Wimberly was indicted on a charge of family violence battery in January for hitting her 15-year-old daughter on Oct. 22, leaving a deep bruise on the teen’s arm.

Wimberly’s daughter was in court Wednesday to support her mother. Wimberly lost her DFCS job after her arrest. The incident was reported by a school official – a DFCS call that Wimberly answered.

As part of her sentence, Judge J. Wade Padgett included a special condition: Wimberly cannot use physical discipline on any child while on probation. Wimberly was sentenced under the First Offender Act.

Something just is not right

Something just is not right here.
I feel for Mrs. Sharonika Wimberly was trying to discipline her child. One deep bruise? It seems there would be more marks left for abuse and this could have been a one time problem. Now does the sentence say she can use physical discipline after 12 months probation? Well Mom has lost her job now---just dont know about this one.

It was a little more

It was a little more complicated than that. She beat her so badly the Doctors initially thought her arm had been broken. Turns out she beat her daughter with a broom handle, though the mother claimed that it was with a 'studded belt'. And all this over the girl using her cell phone too much.

Judge Padget, why not some

Judge Padgett, why not some mandatory counselling to help her get to the root of her anger and dysfunctional parenting skills?
