Richmond County sheriff’s deputies said Sammy Detroy Richards, of the 3300 block of Burton Drive, was upset over family issues.

He eventually was talked into surrendering by Investigator Scot Herring.

The incident sparked widespread traffic delays as sheriff’s deputies blocked lanes of both Bobby Jones Expressway and Deans Bridge Road and motorists were forced to seek detours. Lt. Ramone Lamkin said deputies were able to divert traffic, although one minor accident was blamed on the incident. All lanes were reopened by noon.

Lt. Calvin Chew said there were no charges pending connected to the incident. Richards was taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center for an evaluation.

Traffic is stopped, call his bluff. It isn't like he is on the ledge of a skyscraper or something. What is he going to do, sprain his ankle? Heck, pull a couple of tractor trailers under him to break the 4 foot fall.

Yes Happy, we all wish for a good outcome, my point is that they have traffic stopped, creating a huge back-up. They have no pressing need to extend this as he is not in a life threatening position.

Wouldn't you assume traffic

Wouldn't you assume traffic is shut down in the event he does jump?
I know I wouldn't want to be the person who ran over him.

I hope he gets help as well. Life is tough for many. I never want to lose sight of grace.

Turkey?

From the article I thought it was a human being and now I read it is a "turkey". If so then call the Humane Society.

I'm glad that he didn't jump-whether it be a "4 ft fall " or not. We don't know what the circumstances are that made him act out. I hope he gets the help he needs.

Turkey elaborated

My post was in response to an earlier one that has since been removed. I would never classify a depressed or despondent individual as a "turkey". Clearly the person needs some help and I hope he gets it.

Turkey

Read enough of Jake's comments to know he was not calling the poor guy a turkey, but sometimes removed post cause confusion.

Understanding and Caring is Needed.

Thank God they talked him down. I took an extended class for these type of emergencies while working EMS. I was one of 7 people in my EMS service trained to talk or try to reason with an individual wanting to end their life by whatever means. I learned that if they are going to do it they do it quickly. Then there are others like this man today. He was at the end of his rope and this was his way of crying out for help. While to you and me this was an irrational act, he was at the point in his life that he did not know what to do. When a person gets to this point the only thing that is going to save him is a sympathetic ear and someone to tell them they understand and they care, no matter how long it takes.
I did not see that "turkey" remark and I am glad that I didn't. I have been on many suicides in my 22 yrs in EMS with the youngest being 13 yrs old and all these people needed was for someone to show that they understood and cared. I applaud the AC for removing that remark because in todays electronic media world that man has the ability to go back and read the news stories of his "cry-out" for help. If he happens to read derogatory remarks he may decide to finish his task, and we do not want that for him. Getting stuck in a traffic jam is nothing compared to having to bury someone. I pray he gets the help he needs.

Jumper

FBI should should charge him with interfering with Interstate commerce! Deans Bridge Rd is US HWY 1 and Bobby Jones is part of the US Interstate Hwy.system.

He matters.

You are correct. He really didn't want to jump. What he really wants is some understanding. Answers to his problems. An end to the pain and struggles of his circumstances and relationships. Sense made of a senseless life. His needs met.

He didn't try to hurt anyone; he just wants his own pain to stop and I'm sure he had no idea that he would end up in the news.

I'm praying he's going to get the practical, emotional, relational and spiritual help that he needs to get his life turned around, because he's a human being made in the image of Christ. Sammy Richards, matters.

Now I also have the benefit of a picture. Like I said, pull a couple of tractor trailers under the guy, then grab him. Better ways to handle it than snarling traffic for 2.5 hours.

"You are correct, Willow. He is a human being....

....and he has value."

I'm not going to agree out of hand that he has value simply because he is human. Some humans just aren't worth saving.

But let's give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he just needs to catch a break, or have someone give him support that's been missing in his life. I don't know. I do know that depression and real and can be crippling.

I hope he can pull it together.
