Michael D. Mathis, 40, pleaded guilty in Burke County Superior Court to two counts of first-degree vehicular homicide. The charges rose to the felony level because Mathis was drag racing when he lost control of his vehicle and hit the victims, Assistant District Attorney Keith Johnson said.
KeShon Burdette, 15, and Kevin Johnson, 27, were killed Nov. 27, 2011. They were either watching the race or walking along the road when the crash occurred, the prosecutor said.
The second racer, Torrance L. Crumbley, 35, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree vehicular homicide. His case is expected to be called in April.
