Richmond County Sheriff’s deputies were searching late Tuesday for two suspects armed with a machine gun who attempted to rob the General Nutrition Center in the 500 block of Bobby Jones Expressway around 9 p.m.
Police searched the shopping center’s roof and attic area with assistance from Augusta Fire Department, but the suspects – who had been thought to be hiding there – were not found.
According to a report from sheriff’s Investigator Cheryl Wright, a GNC store clerk suffered minor injuries but was able to escape to safety.
The only description provided by authorities was that the suspects are a black woman and a Hispanic man.
The commotion caused a stir at Gold’s Gym next door, where a number of people were working out. Gold’s Gym employee Lauren Zolotas said she instructed customers to run to the back of the gym after learning of the robbery attempt.
