An Augusta man facing numerous charges, including slapping a baby, pleaded guilty Monday and was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison.

Alvin C. Roberson Jr., 36, was sentenced to 27 years followed by 10 years on probation. Judge J. Wade Padgett sentenced Roberson in Richmond County Superior Court for aggravated assault with intent to rob, two weapon charges, cruelty to children and battery.

The offenses occurred May 19, when Ladarria Withers lost a cellphone and a gold chain when she was accosted, and June 19, when Roberson was arrested after a mother told officers she saw Roberson slap her baby very hard, according to court documents and an earlier report.

The child has made a complete recovery, Assistant District Attorney Titus Nichols said Monday.

Roberson spent 13 years in prison for aggravated assault and weapon charges after being convicted in 1995 of pointing a weapon and pulling the trigger at someone at Laney High School, according to the indictment. No one was wounded in that case, authorities said.
