TRION, Ga. — Authorities are investigating attacks on two correctional officers at a prison in northwest Georgia.

State officials tell The Rome News-Tribune that the officers were assaulted by inmates early Sunday morning at Hays State Prison in Trion.

Georgia Department of Corrections spokeswoman Gwendolyn Hogan said both officers received minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital.

The attacks come after the deaths of three inmates at the Chattooga County facility during the last month and a half.

Damien McClain was killed in a fight in a prison cell on Dec. 26, and Derrick Stubbs was found dead while in protective custody on Dec. 22. Nathaniel Reynolds, 30, died at an area hospital on Jan. 18 following an altercation with fellow inmates.

A good example of why they are inmates

The Inmates at the Hays State Prison in Trion, GA attack Prison Guards there, BECAUSE of the deaths of three inmates at the Chattooga County facility.

May be, they have been in prisons so much they forgot which prison they were in this time?

Eighth Amendement

This is where we need a review or modification of the eighth amendment. Right now, there is only so much you can do to punish these animals due to the "cruel and unusual punishment" clause. I understand why the founders put it in there, they didn't want torture and other barbarous methods used on prisoners.

I contend though, that it limits the ability of corrections facilities to lock away the incorrigible troublemakers to make a more peaceful existance for the rest. I don't think that just because you burgled a house or stole a car that you should have to live among animals that will take your life for glancing at them the wrong way. Prison isn't supposed to be nice, but having these animals walking around inside is unacceptable.

Please don't downgrade the animals of this world by calling prisoners "animals" - Animals would never do what these criminals do!

Make an example of them. Not

Make an example of them. Not for us, but for the rest of them. There's plenty that can be done, of course, we cant hurt their feelings or violate their "rights", no matter how much they violate ours.
