ATLANTA — The Supreme Court of Georgia has upheld the malice murder conviction and life prison sentence of a Georgia man accused of killing his daughter in a so-called “honor killing.”

Prosecutors say Pakistani native Chaudry Rashid said he killed his daughter after she disgraced the family.

Rashid was accused of strangling 25-year-old Sandeela Kanwal during the summer of 2008 in Clayton County because she planned to divorce her husband from an arranged marriage.

A jury convicted Rashid in May 2011 on murder and assault charges.

Rashid appealed the decision to the state Supreme Court, saying jurors shouldn’t have been allowed to see a video of him describing the killing to relatives. The justices disagreed in a unanimous decision, ruling that he had no expectation of privacy during the conversation at a police station.

America's Laws, Not Pakistani Laws

Hey Chaudry Rashid, you are in America, did you forget? Murder is murder here in Georgia, maybe you would have gotten away with it in Pakistan or Dearborn, Michigan, but, not here where some of us don't blame a spouse for divorcing their no-good other half! Where's that great son-in-law now? Maybe he will send you some money for your account in prison. I honestly hope you rot in prison!

Savagery like this should be instructive

to anyone who actually believes intervention by the United States, or any other western power with a Judeo-Christian cultural heritage, is going to have any real impact for the good in places like Afghanistan or even Pakistan. And that also applies to many other middle east nations as well, no matter how wealthy and "enlightened" the rulers may "seem" or try to present themselves as being.

These are very primitive people, socially, with the family far more important than any individual. We make absolutely no sense to them, even had our culture not become so abominably immoral and disgusting over the past 40 years.

They simply do not have any frame of reference for a social order in which the individual is the basic unit and is more important than any other functional unit, and certainly more important than the whole.

Individual

Excellent comments, Fiat. Unfortunately, President Obama is not too keen on individual rights, either. He puts "class" as the basic functional unit. Individuals can go to the back of the bus.
