Davon Saxton, 27, pleaded guilty to two counts of use of a firearm during the commission of a crime for his role in two holdups that netted nearly $154,000 – money that must be repaid.
U.S. District Court Judge J. Randal Hall sentenced Saxton to more than 24 years in federal prison without the possibility of parole.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Patricia Rhodes told the judge that more indictments are expected in the armed robberies that took place in Aiken, Columbia and Richmond counties and in the Atlanta area over two years. The targets included two armored car services, check-cashing businesses and restaurants.
Saxton had no criminal history before hooking up with Andrew Walker, 32, of Augusta; Oscar M. Bwanali, 26, of Atlanta; and Joey L. Greene Jr., 28, of Charlotte, N.C. Together, they stole nearly half a million dollars.
Locally, the group was indicted on charges in:
• the Aug. 1, 2009, armed robbery of a Chili’s restaurant in Augusta
• the Sept. 3, 2009, armed robbery of Check Exchange in Augusta
• the Dec. 9, 2009, armed robbery of Check Cashing in Grovetown
• the Feb. 1, 2010, attempted robbery of Ruby Tuesday in Augusta
• the Aug. 9, 2011, armed robbery of a Loomis armored car driver in Columbia County
They were also charged in the Sept. 14, 2010, robbery of a Garda Cash Logistics armored car in Atlanta.
Walker was sentenced to 25 years in prison, Bwanali to 20 years in prison and Greene to 71 months.
