1 caught, 2 sought after Cedar Street attack

Police continue to search for two suspects in a Thursday night robbery and beating that sent a man to the hospital.

One suspect was arrested shortly after he sped away from deputies and crashed into a car and then a ditch on New Savannah Road.

The victim, Benjamin Franklin Rhodes, 39, was arrested after his release from the hospital on a child support superior court bench warrant.

According to a news release, deputies were called about 8:30 p.m. to the 900 block Cedar Street where they discovered Rhodes badly beaten. The Rhodes told police he’d been assaulted by his roommate Michael Gibson, 23, his brother, Freddie Gibson, 22, and Charles Kellam, 21. The three also took his car, Rhodes said.

Lt. Calvin Chew said the motive appears to be robbery.

Kellam was booked into Richmond County jail on charges of armed robbery, possession of a knife or firearm during the commission of a crime, aggravated assault, false imprisonment and theft by taking.

Police continue to search for the Gibson brothers, who will face the same charges.
