BLACKSBURG, S.C. — A Blacksburg Middle School teacher has been charged with a sex crime involving a student.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reported that police say 61-year-old Randy Hawkins of Gaffney is charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

A police report says a witness saw Hawkins hit a 13-year-old girl on the buttocks with his hand. The incident was reported to police last month.

Cherokee County School Superintendent Quincie Moore says Hawkins is on paid administrative leave while the district investigates.

She says Hawkins taught a resources class and worked with special needs children. He has been with the school district for 7 years.

Where are all those people...

that were defending the charlie rape gang as just harmless fun? This is what happens when bad behavior is not addressed. I bet it's not ok by those same people that defended those poor little misjudged kids.

Too Bad

She probably deserved it; but this type of punishment is best administered by parents.

Blacksburg SC needs a new name. We are offended by its implications. Overtly racist. Black is a negative connotation. Black heart, black lung, Black Plague, black hole, black board, etc. are all negative triggers. Once had a female AA supervisor who stated in a meeting that she was offended by the term black and did not want to hear it used.

Hold on a minute. Was this an "atta girl" pat, a "bad girl" whack, or a "dirty old man" touch?

I know that there is supposed to be no touching but there is a big difference in a charge of criminal sexual conduct with a child and a paddling the bottom physical "abuse" charge.

"Hitting a girl on the buttocks" sounds like a stretch to a criminal sexual conduct charge.

Unanswered Questions

The police/prosecutors might want to re-think this one. There was a single witness. Is this witness another teacher, another special-needs student, another student who wanted some payback? Not much evidence to go on here.

Was the smack on the bottom punitive? If so, why criminal sexual conduct? If the teacher was trying to be sexually suggestive that's one thing, but mere touching like this does not constitute sexual conduct. If that was the case, every kid that got smacked on the bottom during the days of corporal punishment could be defined as sexually abused, which is ridiculous.

Sometimes prosecutors go too far.

The reason is...

The reason the charge is third-degree criminal sexual conduct is because he used his hand instead of a paddle. The age of the student may play a part in the charges also. The teacher didn't think before he reacted, but a male teacher putting their hand on a 13 year old's buttocks is just plain wrong, no matter what the reason may be.
