Guilty plea ends Augusta attempted rape case

An Augusta man whose alleged rape attempt was foiled by a well-aimed swing with a paint can pleaded guilty to reduced charges Monday.

Donell A. Brooks, 41, pleaded in Richmond County Superior Court to a felony charge of obstruction of an officer and misdemeanor charges of trespass and disorderly conduct.

Judge Michael N. Annis accepted the plea negotiation of four years in prison followed by three years of probation. Assistant District Attorney Justin Jones said Brooks will not be paroled early because of his prior convictions.

After the victim reported the break-in and attempted rape July 21, officers found Brooks in the neighborhood, covered in paint, Jones said. Brooks, who struggled with the officers, was taken to a hospital because of his injury caused by the blow from the can.

The victim has moved to Connecticut and was not interested in cooperating with Brooks’ prosecution, so the charges were reduced to what could be proved without her testimony, Jones said.
