MONTEZUMA, Ga. — A 21-year-old woman is charged with making a false statement to police after starting a rumor that she found a dead baby in the trash.

Montezuma police say Alexis Boland was on her way to work at a dollar store and saw a baby doll in a trash bin. Boland told police she thought it would be funny to play a joke on a co-worker and say she saw a dead baby.

Police say customers overheard Boland telling her co-worker the story and calls began flooding the department. Authorities tracked the rumor to Boland — who stuck with the story when she was initially interviewed. She later told the truth and said she panicked when police approached her. Boland was arrested Wednesday.

Montezuma is about 66 miles east of Columbus.

In this day and time, probably not the smartest thing to do. But I'm also thankful it was not true.

Dumb Joke - sure

A waste of LEO time - sure.

Worth tying up court time for a joke that got out of hand - Not sure.

Worth a meeting with the local DA to arrange some voluntary Administratively applied Community service time - SURE

Worth jail time - No, save the cell for physically aggressive criminals to pose a physical threat to citizens.

I don't think she should be arrested...

and she wouldn't have when approached by the police if she fessed up. I understand the panic too. I think something as simple as a traffic ticket type arrest should have been warranted with a plea out for community service agreed to by all parties without even wasting one second of the court's time...JMO.

People are getting stupider and nosier every day.

Wouldn't it be nice if those eavesdroppers had just asked this misguided nitwit if what she was saying really was the truth, and promising to pass it on to the police if it was true?

But nooooo. People don't bother to verify something before jumping into other people's business and causing chaos. I see it every single day: Nosy, stupid people always making something out of nothing and causing trouble for other people.
