Groping suspect charged with assaulting sheriff's deputy

A Grovetown man punched a Columbia County sheriff’s deputy in the Evans Wal-Mart parking lot, then crashed into a second officer’s vehicle while fleeing the store early Sunday, authorities said.

Javantroi Perez Walden, 34, who since July has been charged with groping at least four women at Wal-Marts and a teenager at a Sonic, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and other charges.

According to Capt. Steve Morris, the spokesman for the sheriff’s office, Sgt. David Heaton saw a car sitting vacant in the Wal-Mart parking lot with the engine running around 1:55 a.m.

As Heaton was running the license plate, Walden walked out of the store toward the vehicle. When Heaton tried to question him, Walden punched him in the neck and drove off, Morris said.

While Heaton was chasing the car, Deputy Eddie Moseley was sitting at the traffic light at Belair and Washington roads. Walden rammed into Moseley, causing “extensive damage to both cars,” Morris said.

There were no injuries and no other vehicles involved, Morris said. Moseley’s Dodge Charger was brand new.

Walden was out of jail on bond from a Sept. 17 arrest on charges of groping three women at two Columbia County Wal-Marts. A 57-year-old told deputies that a man grabbed her breast at the Evans Wal-Mart and ran out of the store, which was caught on surveillance video.

The same day, two women, ages 26 and 39, reported having their breasts grabbed at the Martinez Wal-Mart on Bobby Jones Expressway by a man who matched the description from the incident in Evans.

Walden was also arrested July 3 and charged with two counts of sexual battery, accused of grabbing the breasts of a 21-year-old woman at the Martinez Wal-Mart and a 17-year-old server at Sonic on Belair Road.

All the charges are still pending.

In Sunday’s incident, Walden was charged with aggravated assault, willful obstruction of a law enforcement officer, failure to maintain lane, a safety belt violation, driving in violation of conditions of a limited permit, reckless driving, fleeing/attempt to elude a police officer for felony offense and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Morris said no incidents of groping were reported at the Evans Wal-Mart early Sunday but that Walden is a suspect in a Friday groping at the store in which charges are pending.

Car running

I must have missed something with this report. The only reason this person was a suspect was because his car was running?

Stay Away

I think he needs to stay away from Walmart! His trouble seems to be related to the store more than the women!!!

Yeah, an empty vehicle with

Yeah, an empty vehicle with the engine running at 2 in the morning is weird, but not necessarily suspicious. A dude punching a deputy in the neck just because the deputy was asking him what was up with the car running???...now THAT'S suspicious!! And really, if you think about it, ANYBODY who elects to commit any crime in that area is pretty stupid, because the law enforcement center is about a half-mile away...and that area is usually crawling with police at all hours of the day and night! I live in a neighborhood very close by, called the police for something strange we saw outside of an empty house, and the cop got their in something like 3 minutes!

If that would have happened in Augusta we wouldn't be reading about this because no cop would have done a damn thing about a car running

@Patty-P

Is that sarcasm? Please tell me you aren't serious. Please, Please, Please tell me you are just kidding. This is the second time in a few days I've seen you post a short comment about second chances, with repeat offenders. So, I thinking you being sarcastic and I certainly hope you are.

It does appear that that is the reason he ran the mans tag number. Probably seemed suspicious to leave a vehicle running that late at night. Or the cop had plenty of time on his hands and made a wise choice.

Yes, Patty is applying

Yes, Patty is applying sarcasm and CC is more involved because they have time to be. Their call rate is nothing compared to RC.

It's really great they caught this guy. Great work Columbia County LEO's!

Well let's see how involved the judges will be in getting this creature off the streets before he strikes again. He's lucky he hasn't ran into the wrong woman yet.

must be bitter about something, because he doesn't know what he is talking about. Richmond Co. Deputies are as pro-active as they can be, but going call to call doesn't give too much time to patrol. I know for a fact, if they saw something like this, they would check it out. Why the bitterness?

Here's some facts: The CCSD had a BOLO on this pervert's car ( a grey buick skylark). They knew that he was hitting walmarts overnight. They knew that he was homeless and was living out of his car, they had been actively seeking this individual for over a week when the first assaults happened at the bobby jones store last week, so now you know why he was running a plate on his car in a walmart parking lot at 2:00 in the morning. Hope this helps.

Ps. @richmachiatto that picture is a little disturbing lol

now that's a name! i'd like to know more about the BRAND NEW dodge charger. that's 35k if loaded with TT&L. i think a running brand new car at 2 AM in a huge parking lot is very suspicious. along the lines of something bad has happened to the owner. kidnapping, etc. i would think the person was drunk or stole something and left the car running for a fast getaway. textbook policing to me. congrats officer

sugarsugar, He was not charged because he did not force the women to do anything. They were conned into believing they were on a TV show.

Kudos' to Sgt. David Heaton that spotted the car sitting vacant in the Wal-Mart parking lot with the engine running just before 2a.m.

For the 1 or 2 that don't understand the significance of this and the sharp observance skills of the Officer Heaton.

Think harder it will come to you, maybe?

Escalating

His behavior is escalating. First, assaulting teen-aged girls; second, assaulting grown women; third, assaulting a police officer and fleeing the scene. The courts might deny bond this time, but when he pleads, will they merely sentence him to time served and probation?

@Discussion: Heck yea it is worth a car!

I don't know about you but I would be pretty upset if one of the victims was either my daughter or wife! And if he is really enjoying himself he might graduate to a higher degree of sexual assault.

He can overcome this setback......

I'll bet he still doesn't have enough charges against him to not get hired by Richmond County. I'm sure they have a few retiring felons since that news story ran a couple of years back.

What a loser!

Throw the book at him and get him off our streets before he takes his seedy behavior to the next level.

What woman in their right mind would ever consider getting into a relationship with such a man once they learn of his publicized nasty history?
