Man jailed after leading police on chase

Mark Winston Greathouse

A man was jailed Tuesday night after leading officers on a chase around Aiken, authorities said.

Mark Winston Greathouse, of Aiken, was charged with failure to stop for blue lights and siren, hit and run with property damage, malicious injury greater than $10,000, driving with a suspended license, and driving under the influence, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety’s Sgt. Jake Mahoney.

About 7:30 p.m., the Aiken Department of Public Safety received a report of an erratic driver traveling south on Laurens Street near Hampton Avenue. The caller said the 2002 Honda Accord had already struck several mailboxes. Officers located Greathouse near Laurens Street and Edgefield Avenue, but he reversed direction, Mahoney said.

Police used stop sticks at Hampton Avenue and Camellia Street, where the Honda struck an Aiken County Sheriff’s deputy’s car. The deputy was not injured.
