An Augusta woman on probation for deprivation of children is in jail facing additional charges.

Laura E. Baughman, 30, of the 4000 block of Union Grove Circle, was arrested Friday after three children, ages 12, 11 and 7, were found living in a filthy house that was condemned by a city building inspector. The children are now in state custody.

According to a Richmond County sheriff’s report, a deputy called to a Department of Family and Children Services inspection at Baughman’s home found dirt, mold, feces and insects. A closet in the children’s room had a nest of spiders from floor to ceiling, the report states.

On Nov. 10, 2010, Baughman was charged with several counts of deprivation of a minor after children, ages 10, 9 and 5, were found at home without any adult supervision.

Baughman pleaded no contest to the charges June 22, 2011, and was sentenced to three years’ probation and fined $1,215. The judge ordered $100 suspended from each count if Baughman attended parenting classes for six months. Court records do not indicate whether Baughman completed any class.

Immediately and never, ever let her have her children unsupervised again. Ever, ever, ever.

I Don't Get It

So what did this woman do so spectacular to get her children back in the first place? Giving her a second chance to do right by her children is like taking a prostitute off of the street and try to make her into a house wife.

It seems to me that the system failed those children. There should have been a lot of unexpected visits by DFACS to see how those children were living. I am curious to know about their health conditions.

Praying for the children. They don't deserve this.

Maybe I'm looking at this

Maybe I'm looking at this differently. My thought was, has anyone or any agency tried to help this young woman? Does she have a job? Where is the father of these three children and why isn't he helping? Is he deceased and she's trying to raise them on her own? Is she renting the residence that has been condemned by the city building inspector or does she own the home? It makes no sense to me for a judge to place a fine on someone who is at the bottom of the barrel....community service or something useful would seem more appropriate. If she had the money for the fine, wouldn't it make sense that she would use the money to get her house in better condition?

I have no clue, maybe this young woman is at fault for all these circumstances but it just seems that when someone is down on their luck and reaches this point that we automatically assume that they are worthless and at fault. How do we know that maybe if someone would lift a helping hand, guide and teach this woman how to be a clean housekeeper and good mother, maybe we wouldn't be reading about it in the paper.

Always The Children Suffer

I think maybe you are looking at this woman and her circumstances wrong, ICL. She has done this same thing(more or less) before, so I'm thinking she hasn't learned anything. I don't care how poor someone is, you can still be clean. You know the old saying, "first time, shame on you, the second time, shame on me(in this case, the court and DFCS). These kids do Not have a chance with this woman..............(I usually agree with your posts, I just cannot on this)
