ATLANTA -- Woodruff Arts Center officials say a former employee submitted $1.438 million in fraudulent invoices over the last five years.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Woodruff’s president and CEO, Virgina Hepner, said she didn’t learn about the “suspicious looking” invoices until the first of November, right after the alleged thief resigned from the center. It didn’t take long for auditors to piece together the fraud, Hepner said, and when confronted with their findings the unnamed employee, described as a “mid-level” administrator, acknowledged culpability.

The matter is being turned over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Hepner said in a Tuesday morning press conference.

“This individual was able to find a weakness in our interior controls,” said Woodruff Board Chair Larry Gellerstedt.

The most stupid thing of all

The most stupid thing of all is this thief got caught through greed. They could have stopped at a half million, skipped town, and enjoyed their take.

Funny, I never thought of the Woodruff Arts Center as a museum.

The Arts Center management must really be running a bloated empire if they didn't miss $1.5 million dollars. They must have such a big endowment that they don't need any more contributions.
