A 26-year-old Martinez man was arrested early Sunday for firing shots on Floyd Street and leading deputies on a chase.

According to a Richmond County sheriff’s incident report, deputies were patrolling near Floyd Street around 4 a.m. when they spotted a Hyundai Sonata parked in the fire lane with shots being fired from both sides of the vehicle.

As officers approached the vehicle, the driver fled the scene, running through a stop sign and almost hitting three pedestrians before jumping out on the 1100 block of Ninth Avenue. The passenger also fled but has not been captured.

Police chased the driver, who was identified as Derrick Anthony Brown, over several fences before he was caught.

Brown was booked into Richmond County jail on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, reckless conduct, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is also being held for questioning on an unrelated case.

What is the penalty for the weapons charges? It should be an automatic 25 years- no parole; to run consecutively with the other convictions.
