Cecil “Red” Nelson, 33, was part of a three-man kidnapping ring busted by the FBI in January. Nelson pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit kidnapping in August. He and two associates kidnapped two men in the Bryan County area, one in late 2011 and another in early 2012, according to a statement by the FBI. In both kidnappings, the victims were abducted at gunpoint and later released after a ransom was paid, the statement said.
Around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Nelson and five other inmates escaped the jail through an unlocked plumbing room door that led to a staircase and the roof. Three were back in custody by Sunday evening.
Nelson is from Pembroke, Ga., and authorities think he might be back in the area. He is described as black, 5 feet, 11 inches tall and 245 pounds. Anyone with information can call the FBI’s Atlanta office (912) 232-3716 or Savannah Crime Stoppers at (912) 234-2020.
Late Monday, two other escapees – Matthew Shepherd Findley, 24, and Jeffery Rashawn Webb – also remained at large.
