The death was originally described a suicide, but is now a “death investigation,” according to Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.
An autopsy was scheduled Monday at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Augusta, Columbia County Coroner Harriett Garrison said.
A neighbor called deputies to Kitchens’ home on Valdez Drive about 9 p.m. Saturday, Garrison said. They found her in the kitchen with a gunshot wound from a handgun. Garrison pronounced her dead in the home at 9:45 p.m.
The coroner refused to release more details because of the investigation.
“It was just suspicious,” Garrison said. “There was a lot of cause for suspicion.”
