Athens mom charged after newborn stabbed to death

ATHENS, Ga. -- A 21-year-old Athens woman was charged with murder Thursday night after her newborn child was stabbed to death earlier in the day.

Athens-Clarke police said Cassandra Elyse Norwood was under guard at the hospital, where she was being treated for blood loss from giving birth.

Norwood stabbed her male infant in the home where she lived with her parents and other family members, on Great Oak Drive in the Waverly Woods subdivision off Whit Davis Road.

“From what we were able to determine, the child was born at the residence,” said Capt. Clarence Holeman, commander of the Athens-Clarke police Centralized Criminal Investigations Division.

Norwood was alone in one part of the house when she gave birth without anyone else knowing, police said.

Someone found the lifeless child and called 911 shortly after 1 p.m.

Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney Ken Mauldin responded to the scene and presumably was involved in discussions that resulted in a decision to bring criminal charges.

Holeman would not speculate on the woman’s motives or whether she might suffer from postpartum psychosis or other mental illness.

He said she not receiving psychiatric care at the hospital.

When Norwood is well enough, she will be transferred to the Clarke County Jail.
