The Exchange Club of South Augusta presented its public safety awards Tuesday.

Five members of the Richmond County Fire Department – Lt. Daniel Steele, Sgt. Robert Holliday and firefighters Zachary Bradford, Tavaris Kidd and Joshua Hix – were honored for their role in pulling a woman from her burning home off Rosier Road.

Deputy Kenneth Mercer received the award presented to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. Lt. Robbie Silas said Mercer exhibited his dedication to the county’s residents when he jumped in front of a gunman to ensure a female bystander could be escorted to safety earlier this month.

The marshal’s office recipient, Steve Hammonds, was unable to attend the ceremony but will receive an award later.
