Former Columbia County Commissioner Scott Dean’s adopted daughter and another woman pleaded not guilty Friday to burglary charges.

Marlin Azucena Dean, 19, of Martinez, pleaded not guilty to burglary and theft by receiving stolen property. She’s accused of stealing jewelry from her adoptive mother and selling it. Eva Lopez-Macais Nevarez pleaded not guilty to burglary in connection with the incident.

Dean was arrested July 21 in Harlem. A judge refused to grant bond for her at an Aug. 14 preliminary hearing, saying she posed a significant flight risk. She’s being held in the Columbia County Detention Center.

Dean’s adoptive mother said she was out of town for five days and returned home July 20. The next morning, she awoke and found a bracelet lying on the floor alerting her to check her jewelry box, Harlem Department of Public Safety Officer Chet Hopkins said at the August hearing. She reported about $26,000 worth of jewelry missing from the bedroom of her North Hicks Street home in Harlem.

Nevarez told authorities she took Dean to a Martinez pawn shop where she pawned a 1-carat diamond engagement ring set, worth $5,000, for $750, and possibly a gold heart necklace, Hopkins said. Dean used her passport for identification and there is video surveillance footage of the transaction.

The ring was identified by Dean’s adoptive mother and recovered, as was a topaz ring Dean pawned May 9 at a shop in Augusta.

Adoptive mother

I don't know why the repeated use of the term "adoptive mother" in this article bothers me, but it does. While factually correct, it seems unnecessary. Once a child is adopted, he or she is simply your child and you are simply his/her mother or father. I know that the turmoil in this family has been horrific, but they are still a family like it or not. I prefer the attitude of the man who said "I have 5 kids and 2 are adopted but I forget which ones."

I said basically the same thing. I don't understand the need to everytime they say mother or father use the term adopted. I guess legally once you adopt a child they are yours but to the news media it must make a story more interesting?

If it must be mentioned, I would think a simple sentence stating so and so was adopted by such and such..blah blah. I just don't think it should be such a big deal.
