Columbia County authorities are looking for the family of a man hit and killed by a car near Harlem on Saturday.

Columbia County Deputy Corner Harriett Garrison said she was unable to locate any next of kin for Anthony Pleban Varga, 49.

Varga stepped in front of a truck on Gordon Highway near Sheryl Drive about 10:30 p.m., Garrison said. Deputies found his body in a nearby ditch. He was carrying no identification.

The driver of the truck, whom authorities did not identify, will not be charged.

An autopsy performed at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Atlanta on Tuesday confirmed Varga’s identity through fingerprints.

Garrison said Varga was last known to be in Nashville, Tenn., where he was treated in a hospital emergency room. He was previously in Ohio and Arkansas. He was believed to be homeless and nomadic, Garrison said.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Varga’s family should contact Garrison by calling the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 541-2800.
