James Cochran, 26, was arrested after an all-night standoff in North Agusta Friday night.

North Augusta Public Safety officers responded to reports of gunfire at North Augusta Gardens Apartments on Hugh Street about 11 p.m. Friday. They found James Cochran, 26, barricaded in his apartment, according to a news release.

Because there were no open lines of communication into the apartment, the NADPS SWAT Team threw a phone through Cochran’s window, but he did not answer. Throughout the night officers tried to communicate with Cochran but failed.

Members of the NADPS SWAT Team threw tear gas into the apartment and Cochran responded by firing a shot at them. Officers did not fire back, but administered gas into the apartment a second time.

Cochran still did not leave.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and SLED’s SWAT Team also responded to assist in apprehending Cochran.

Officers broke into the apartment Saturday morning and found Cochran hiding in the bathroom under a bunch of wet towels. He surrendered shortly before 7 a.m. on the doorstep of the apartment with a knife and a shotgun in his hands.

No one else was inside.

Cochran is charged with five counts of attempted murder to law enforcement officers.

Someone please explain, either the officers broke into the apartment and found him hiding under some wet towels.....or he surrendered on the doorstep of the apartment with a knife and shotgun in his hands.

First, if the officers found him why wasn't he taken into custody right then? If he wasn't taken into custody, what did they do, back out of the house and wait until he decided to come out on the steps.....this article doesn't make sense.
