A South Carolina man was in jail Monday on charges that included attempted murder, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

The victim, whom the department did not identify, told officers initially that he had been pistol-whipped, but an examination found he had been grazed by a bullet during an altercation about 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the 500 block of Abbeville Avenue NW.

Officers arrested Ronald Harris Jr. 40, of Ridge Spring, S.C., after a short chase in the Hahn Village area of Aiken.

The weapon had not been recovered Monday, and investigators were working to determine a motive.

The victim was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital with a wound that did not appear life-threatening.
