A 40-year-old Augusta woman is in the Richmond County jail after she fled the scene of an accident Wednesday while driving under the influence with three children in the vehicle, police say.

According to Richmond County sheriff’s Capt. Scott Gay, Valerie Rene Garrett, of Fox Trace Drive, was driving north on Walton Way Extension around 6:40 p.m. when she hit the back of a vehicle stopped in the left turn lane at the Wheeler Road intersection.

The driver told deputies that the woman stepped out of her vehicle and looked at the damage before she got back in and made a U-turn.

Garret’s black Ford Explorer was later spotted in the Jackson and Wrightsboro roads area. A deputy found Garrett to be intoxicated with three children, ages 4 to 7, in the vehicle.

Garrett has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident, following too closely, driving while license suspended, driving under the influence, no child safety restraint and three counts of driving under the influence with a passenger under 14 years of age.
