Homeless man in hospital after stepping in front of vehicle

A homeless man who was injured last week when running into an SUV with his bicycle was hospitalized again Tuesday night after he stepped in front of a vehicle in Martinez and was hit.

Dwight Earl Baggett, 50, is in critical condition at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, according to hospital spokeswoman Denise Parrish.

Baggett was walking along Furys Ferry Road near River Watch Parkway about 9:30 p.m., when he walked in front of a Lexus and was hit, said Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.

No charges will be filed against the driver, Morris said.

On Aug. 20, Baggett was taken to MCG after hitting the back of a Saturn Vue that was stopped at a stop sign at Old Petersburg Road and New Petersburg Drive in Martinez. Baggett suffered head trauma, but his injures were not life-threatening.

Alcohol appeared to have been the cause of the earlier accident, according to authorities at the scene.
