South Carolina law enforcement officers investigate the scene of an officer involved shooting in North Augusta. A deputy fired a shot at a car that fled a traffic stop, but the driver escaped on foot.

According to Aiken County sheriff’s Capt. Troy Elwell, police are looking for Eddie J. Brockington, 22.

A deputy working near the school zone at Belvedere Clearwater Road saw a black Saturn with South Carolina plates speed through the area about 7:30 a.m.

The deputy tried to stop the car, but it continued onto Belvedere Ridge.

Elwell said the fleeing driver tried to run over the deputy, who had gotten out of his police cruiser. The deputy fired a shot at the vehicle before returning to his car to continue pursuit.

The Saturn later stopped and both occupants fled. Deputies were able to catch the passenger, whose name was not released. Elwell said he would not be charged.

Belvedere Elementary was on lockdown for about two hours while deputies searched the area for Brockington. Elwell said deputies think he got a ride out of the neighborhood and was no longer in the area surrounding the school.

Police searched the vehicle and found marijuana and a handgun on the driver’s side floorboard, Elwell said.

Deputies said Brockington was wearing blue jeans and a plaid shirt at the time he fled the vehicle; however, deputies believe he could have stripped down to a black undershirt and black shorts or boxers.

Neighbors reported seeing a man matching the description sweating profusely and asking for rides shortly after the incident occurred.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office charged Brockington with attempted murder, failure to stop for blue lights, unlawful possession of a pistol, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute marijuana within a half-mile of a school.

Elwell said police followed several leads on Brockington’s location Wednesday afternoon but were unable to find him.

He is known to travel between Richmond and Aiken counties and is considered armed and dangerous, Elwell said.

Once caught charge him with attempted capital murder, lock him up, then toss the key to his cell in Phinizy Swamp.

Grammar check, please

"Elwell said at one point the fleeing driver attempted to run over the officer who had got out of his vehicle."

Shouldn't that read...the officer who had gotten out of his vehicle?

I hate to be picky, but please use the grammar check tool. Isn't writing your business?

With all that being said, I hope the suspect had got caught soon.
