USC student found with 5 guns in dorm

COLUMBIA — A University of South Carolina freshman has been arrested and accused of having five handguns in his dorm room.

The Walterboro teen has been suspended by the university and has been banned from the Columbia campus. He’s also been ordered to avoid contact with any student, faculty or staff at the school.

The school’s associate director of law enforcement and safety, Scott Prill, says there is no reason to think the student was planning an attack.

Prill says the student was arrested Tuesday and was released Wednesday and returned home to his parents.

The teen faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine if he is convicted.

Freshmen began moving into campus last Friday. Classes start Thursday.

It was not clear if the teen has an attorney.

Defenseless

Okay, we have just now advertised that USC is a target-rich environment with defenseless students. Is that good?

five handguns

I would say "five handguns" is a bit extreme for self defense on a college campus....

Agree with Proud: but............

This chap might have been up to no good but one probably would have been ok for other students. I have the right to keep weapons in my home, car and place of business so a dorm room is a student's home. There are probably more weapons but the smart students don't brag about it like me. They just keep and bear arms quietly!

College Campus

Most college campuses have more law enforcement officers per capita and per square mile than almost anywhere in the city. No one needs 5 handguns on campus.

@Sweet Son: A dorm room does

@Sweet Son: A dorm room does not apply as the person's home in terms of firearms. See Section 16-23-420 of the SC code ( http://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t16c023.php ):

"(A) It is unlawful for a person to possess a firearm of any kind on any premises or property owned, operated, or controlled by a private or public school, college, university, technical college, other post-secondary institution, or in any publicly owned building, without the express permission of the authorities in charge of the premises or property."

Further, the kid should have been charged with a felony and fined, not just kicked out and banned from the school:

"(C) A person who violates the provisions of this section is guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, must be fined not more than five thousand dollars or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."

"Further, the kid should have been charged with a felony and fined, not just kicked out and banned from the school" - The article states that he faces 5 years in prison and a 5,000 dollar fine if he is convicted. This means that he has been charged with a felony but a conviction is still pending. In the meantime, however, he has been banned from the university as well.

@LittleLamb

There are only a few colleges in the country that allow firearms on campus - and usually only for licensed concealed carry. The vast majority still do not allow any firearms on school property. This is nothing new.
