A judge on Tuesday refused to grant bond for the oldest adopted daughter of former Columbia County Commissioner Scott Dean, who was convicted of child molestation last year.
Marlin Azucena Dean, 19, of Ansley Court in Augusta, was arrested July 21 in Harlem and is in the Columbia County Detention Center. She’s accused of stealing jewelry from her adoptive mother, Renee Meyer Dean.
“She poses a significant risk of flight,” Associate Magistrate Judge Jason R. Troiano said at a preliminary hearing.
During the investigation into her adoptive father, Marlin Dean fled to Mexico, and it took a long time and great effort to get her to come back, Assistant District Attorney Madonna Little said.
Renee Dean said she was out of town for five days and returned July 20. The next morning, “she awoke and found a bracelet lying on the floor alerting her to check her jewelry box,” Harlem Department of Public Safety Officer Chet Hopkins said at the hearing.
Renee Dean called authorities and reported about $26,000 worth of jewelry missing from the bedroom of her North Hicks Street home in Harlem.
Marlin Dean was charged with burglary and theft by receiving stolen property. Troiano said there was sufficient evidence to bind the theft charge over to Superior Court for further prosecution.
He refused to bind over the burglary charge, saying there wasn’t enough evidence to prove she entered the home illegally.
A friend told authorities that she took Marlin Dean to a Martinez pawnshop, where she pawned a 1-carat diamond engagement ring set, worth $5,000, for $750, and possibly a necklace, Hopkins said. She used her passport for identification, he said, and there is video surveillance footage of the transaction.
The ring was identified by Renee Dean and recovered, as was a topaz ring that Marlin Dean pawned at a shop in Augusta on May 9.
Even though Troiano didn’t bind the burglary case over for further prosecution, he said the grand jury still has the right to indict Marlin Dean on that charge.
Scott Dean was convicted in December of molesting another of his adopted daughters. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison in February and was denied a new trial in June.
Allegations about him came to light when Marlin Dean ran away from home and was later found in Mexico. In a phone conversation with investigators, she said Dean had tried to have sex with her. She later recanted.
