Man charged in Koger Street shooting

A man has been charged after a shooting on Koger Street that left a man in the hospital Saturday night, police said.

Quantrius Nelson, 24, is charged with aggravated assault in the shooting of Roosevelt Heath, 50, in the 1500 block of Koger Road about 10:45 p.m., Richmond County police reports said.

The report said Nelson and Heath were at a party and got into an argument that turned physical, with Nelson pulling a handgun and shooting Heath in the stomach.

Heath was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital. His condition has not been released.

It's not the gun. It's the idiot holding and firing it that is the problem. The solution is not to take away guns because of child rearing deficiencies on the part of the parent.

It would seem Quantrius has no issue with having a firearm during the commission of a crime.

This from 2006...

"Quantrius Marquette Nelson, 18, of the 1900 block of Harrison Drive, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm during the commission of crime"

I'm sure that he did have a GA Carry Permit, because we know that criminals always obey the law....

There should be a mandatory 5

There should be a mandatory 5 year (or more) sentence for carrying without a permit, and a mandatory 25 year sentence for committing a crime with a gun. Maybe include with that some additional mandatory time for stealing a gun.

In other words, make it very, very painful for those who would use a gun for illegal purposes. It probably won't deter the criminal very much, but at least it will get some of them behind bars for a longer time.
