Richmond County sheriff's officers and Democratic sheriff candidate Richard Roundtree (second from right) speak with Yearby Foston during a standoff on the Sixth Street railroad bridge.

Yearby Foston, 33, was on the railroad trestle about 11 a.m., police said. Police had been searching for him since Thursday, when a woman identified him as the man who attacked, robbed and tried to rape her at a Peach Orchard Road insurance office.

The woman told authorities that Foston, a longtime customer of the business, had entered the office and hit her several times with a pistol and possibly a blunt object. He forced her to the ground at gunpoint and told her to take off her pants.

After she refused to remove her clothing, police said, the assailant hit her several more times, took a laptop and ran away.

Richmond County school Public Safety Lt. Richard Roundtree said he received a call from one of Foston’s relatives about 10:30 a.m., which became a three-way call with Foston on the line. Roundtree said Foston wanted to meet with him and told him to come to the Sixth Street railroad trestle.

“He told me where he was going to be, so I called the sheriff’s office,” said Roundtree, who is facing Capt. Scott Peebles in the Aug. 21 Democratic runoff for Richmond County sheriff.

When Foston walked out onto the bridge, Roundtree followed, along with a couple of sheriff’s deputies.

By 11 a.m., Foston was standing in the middle of the trestle talking with Roundtree as sheriff’s investigators, hostage negotiators, members of the SWAT team, fire rescue officers and North Augusta public safety officers arrived.

CSX Railroad was asked to stop trains on those tracks.

Capt. Scott Gay said negotiators initially believed Foston was armed but later discovered he was not.

“He does not want to go back to prison,” Gay said. “He has a long criminal history.”

Roundtree said the man was agitated by all the commotion and by friends and relatives who continued to call Foston on his cellphone while he stood on the bridge. Foston threatened to harm himself and others, investigators said.

“The best thing that happened was his cellphone fell into the water,” Roundtree said. “From that point on, he was only talking to me.”

Roundtree said Foston attempted to provoke officers into a physical confrontation a couple of times, but they were able to calm him down. He lauded the professionalism shown by sheriff’s deputies and SWAT team members who were keeping their eyes and weapons trained on Foston.

“We held on the fact that we knew he wanted help,” he said.

Roundtree said the suspect said he would jump and at one point leaped down to one of the bridge pilings and lay down.

After about an hour and a half, Roundtree said, he was able to talk Foston into climbing back up to the bridge, and officers took him into custody.

Foston faces charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and criminal attempted rape in connection with the Thursday incident.

Lt. Blaise Dresser said Foston will not face charges for Friday’s incident.

Paramedics were called after one of the suspect’s relatives become distraught, but they said she recovered quickly.

Why was Fred Russell There?

I see the images on WRDW show Fred (Who me Worry?) Russell on the scene. Why? Is he some great negotiator? I wouldnt let him no where near the scene. If he negotiates people like he does our City / County Contracts the man better go ahead and jump.

I know this guy!

He stalked me in Olde Town on a bike! He had his pants unzipped and he was "gratifying" himself. I cursed and screamed at him and he kept going. What a sicko!

So glad Roundtree showed up.

So glad Roundtree showed up. Never mind the other brave officers. This was handled by Sheriff Strength and Capt. Peebles men. But nice of the Chronicle to add Roundtree in there.

Roundtree was only involved

Roundtree was only involved because he's good friends with the suspect's cousin. Birds of a feather flock together? Just wondering.

Triscuit, High Society, and David Parker's comments.

There's no need to try and degrade Mr. Roundtree. As it said in the article, the suspect asked for Roundtree to come to the scene and he would talk. I don't care who came to the scene, as long as no life was taken. And no I personally don't think that Peebles is ready to be the next sheriff, especially knowing now that he switched from a republican to a democrat. What was his purpose? So now that let's me know that he'll bail out at any moment. Why no one ever question why and what was his reason for doing so? Sounds fishy to me .

Yeah, I mean, doesn't this

Yeah, I mean, doesn't this just sound odd?? Roundtree?? The guy called Roundtree,of all people, to come meet up with him?? Was he afraid that the police were going to "take him out" if there wasn't a witness present? This sounds an awful like that mayor up in New Jersey (I think) who has been involved in several "hero" moments, where he's come by JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME to save someone from a burning building or a robbery or whatever else. I think he was even asked by Oprah if he would consider running for governor!! So, is Roundtree waiting for his "Oprah Moment" now? Folks, this just has a fishy smell smeared all over it!! The election was just a few days ago, and now they're headed for a runnoff in a couple of weeks, and then THIS happens?? How does the old saying go?....any press is good press??

Fishy

What sounds fishy is everyone trying to give credit to a certain candidate ....sp....goodness.....what if the man had fallen in the river & died....who would step up for credit then,.......
I bet the same voices wouldn't be on here...:):)

While we are giving CREDIT....why not give some to the Mayor too....he probably was in the area or at least within 5 miles...

This will be very entertaining the next few weeks......ole Roundtree you might get credit for parking your car/truck correctly..hahah

So the cousin, who I believe

So the cousin, who I believe is law enforcement (and and avid Roundtree supporter), got Roundtree involved. Then they arranged to have the suspect turn himself in next to Roundtree's campaign headquarters. I call that opportunity. Then Roundtree loses control of the situation and the guy runs. Opportunitly lost. Then once the situation is under control and the camera's surround the family, Roundtree is smack dab in the middle of them. Opportunity returned.

Glad no one got hurt and all in all he has been arrested. Well, I have a long drive ahead of me, yall have fun talking about this one.

Stop it Tree! Right now! lol

Seriously? I am surprised the AC even ran this story to include Tree's name. Everyone knows who the AC supports & it dang sure isn't Roundtree. And this is a complete setup by Tree & his supporters. Tree ... please stop sending your folks into South Augusta to beat women so you can get on the news! *insert sarcasm here* Y'all are unbelievable. You really are! Lol

It is just amazing...

Not saying this was staged or played for maximum media attention. But, It is amazing the high profile media attention, hero on the spot cases that always seem to happen just before an election isn't it?

Question: The LEO on the Austin Rhodes show indicated that the person arrested has a long history of criminal problems. Plus he was related to one of Roundtree's main HQ campaign staff.

Although I am voting for Peebles.

May I suggest we all take a look at a few of our own problematic family members, that we are nothing like ourselves. Before jumping on the guilt by association band wagon.

Sorry, thats for Sneaky Scott to do to try and persuade the black vote...yea, he actually handed out chicken dinners in the "hood" yet Roundtree walked those neighborhoods after a violent killing well before the election.

And we wonder why they will not name a state university after Augusta, the mentality here is depressing!

Crazy is as crazy does!

He wants people to think he is crazy he knew exactly what he was doing. I know this young man and if you ask me the whole family is off their rocker starting withthe mom. I think she missed a couple of milestones with him. Maybe this time they will lock him up because he shot someone a while ago and got out of that. So maybe this time he will be off the streets for good. Got everybody thinking he was going to jump he should have and it would have been one less problem we would have to deal with. Like I said Crazy is as crazy does but he is not crazy!!!!

Again I ask

Why would the great hope of the police department have to switch parties to run for sheriff ? People seem to try down play this, what if Roundtree was a republican and he switched parties to run for sheriff, would community let this slide... not NO but Hell NO. So when Scott Peoples does this all of his supporters acts like it's no big deal.

Let me give my opinion on this and I may be wrong, I think scott switched parties because he needed some of the black vote and everyone knows African Americans as a majority do not support republican candidates.

Let me see scott wins.... (I hope not) then he goes right back to his republican roots.

The Ole Switch-a-roo trick

Changing parties concern...??

SEAN M.
Please excuse me while I comment on a comment.
I did not open the can of worms, but I will fish with it.

GregGran
Why do you think switching parties has anything to do with just getting black votes?

Should Capt. Peebles changing parties, or the professional issues I have issues with Lt. Roundtree matter more?

Documented issues are what steered my decision?

Not the 2nd guessing of why a person changed parties.
To me, elections have never been an issue of color or party and never will be. But, it is my absolute requirement of any office holder including that of my county sheriff to have the experience to do the job.

Need an example: Look no farther than what 3 1/2 years of what not having the Experience to do the job has gotten us on a national level.

If ever an election should of had the option "NONE OF THE ABOVE, START OVER" that election was it.
