Woman with 2-year-old accused of trying to steal baby monitor

  • Follow Crime & courts

A Trenton, S.C., woman – with her 2-year-old daughter in tow – was arrested at the North Augusta Walmart on Wednesday after being accused of trying to steal a baby monitor, according to a North Augusta Department of Public Safety report.

Letahja Stephens was seen taking the $230 baby monitor off a shelf inside the store and placing it in an empty Walmart bag before trying to leave, according to the report. She was stopped by one of the store’s loss prevention employees and held until a public safety officer could arrive. Stephens admitted to the theft and was arrested, and her daughter was turned over to a friend who came to the store, according to the report.

Stephens was taken to the Aiken County Detention Center, where she is being held on a shoplifting charge.

Parent of the Year

And we wonder why the kids grow up the way they do. What a great example to set in front of your child.

Judges need to start making

Judges need to start making examples instead of slapping these people on the wrists. If parent(s) are not going to teach right from wrong, then society needs to with a heavier hand.

A taste of jail might be a deterrent along with a load of community service. Of course that wouldn't be happening in GA now. And to think I spent many of my adult years wanting to move back to Georgia.

The above statement makes no sense to me. What does this have to do with anything? This happened in North Augusta Walmart in South Carolina and she is from Trenton, South Carolina...so what is your point?

Country comes to town! Did she really believe no one had done this before? Ah, country did not know about the eyes in the sky! I never really understood the old saying,"Ignorance is bliss" because this young ladies ignorance is not making her happy right now.

What happened to

The old saying was "Baby need new shoes". I guess now it's "Baby need new monitor"? If she had let little Stewie hold the monitor, they would have gotten off Scott-Free. Maybe little Stewie was planning on placing the monitor in his room and the transmitter on baby's momma. That makes more sense.

@KSL

Seems to me there is lots of crime everywhere! This woman certainly had champagne taset on a beer budget, she was going for a top of the line monitor. I guess she figured if she was gonna steal one she was gonna steal the best. @tullie, thank you!

SA, you are right. There is a lot of crime everywhere. And I should be able to desire to return to my home territory where my siblings reside. But I have zero interest in living in GA now.

You need a license to drive a car, carry a gun, even to fish. But any idiot can have kids, and often at the expense of the taxpayers. Something wrong with this.

Only $230......she should

Only $230......she should have come to an Augusta Walmart. With our new law in effect anything under $1K gets a pass. I doubt if they would have even detained her. She absolutely would not be facing any jail time.
