Police say they arrested three people who led deputies on a chase Monday through three counties and reached speeds exceeding 100 mph.
About 4 p.m., Richmond County sheriff’s deputies recognized a vehicle that was being sought in multiple states, Capt. Scott Gay said.
When the deputies tried to pull the car over, it quickly accelerated, leading police on a chase on Interstate 20 through Richmond and Columbia counties and into McDuffie County.
Gay said the three people in the vehicle – Dewayne Harrison, 30, Allen Hodge, 40, and Renee Bryant, 33 – were tossing evidence from the car as they sped down the highway.
The three are accused of stealing purses, wallets and IDs in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia, Gay said.
When the car tried to pull off the highway at Exit 174 in McDuffie County, it flipped into a ditch. One person got out and started running but was quickly apprehended, Gay said. No one was seriously injured.
Harrison, Hodge and Bryant were booked into the Columbia County Detention Center, where they await charges from Richmond and Columbia counties and perhaps other jurisdictions.
“We do not know where they are from; they had multiple IDs on them,” Gay said, noting that the names they are booked under could change as officers collect more information.
Gay said the FBI is involved.
