Man nearly hit by train in Thomson

  • Follow Crime & courts

A man was jailed early Sunday after he drove on railroad tracks in Thomson and was almost struck by a train, authorities said.

About 2 a.m., Robert Ellis Berry Jr., of Thomson, was driving south through town on Georgia Highway 17. He tried to turn right onto West Hendricks Street but missed the turn by 50 to 60 feet and ended up driving on the tracks, said Georgia State Patrol Trooper Mark Cabe.

After traveling about 100 feet on the tracks, the car became stuck. A Thomson Police Department officer spotted it and convinced Berry to leave the car because a train was coming.

“He thought he was on the road,” Cabe said.

Not more than 30 seconds later, a 17-car freight train hit the 2006 Nissan Altima head-on, totaling the vehicle, Cabe said. The train was delayed for more than an hour.

Berry was charged with driving under the influence, driving with an expired tag, reckless driving and criminal trespassing. He was being held in the McDuffie County jail.

I heard he was really ticked

I heard he was really ticked off when he heard the other driver was not ticketed for driving on the wrong side of the road. But then again he did not recall the road being that bumpy before either.

CG, if he was that much under

CG, if he was that much under the influence, I'm surprised he could get the key in the ignition.

I know this guy and he has....

Hey Mr. "newsjunkie10".......you know this guy ? If you knew him why would you announce his drinking problem on the Augusta Chronicle Comment Page ? Let me tell you...I do know him. He is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. He'll do anything in the world for you. He did wrong by doing what he did.....but, I'm sure he'll suffer for it. Please don't make stupid comments about things you aren't certain about.
