It took several years, but this month a young boy saw the man who raped him sentenced to prison for life.
A Richmond County Superior Court jury convicted Robert Betney, 44, of one count of aggravated sodomy on July 18. Judge Carl C. Brown Jr. agreed with the prosecutor’s recommendation and sentenced Betney to life in prison.
Assistant District Attorney Grant Usry said Thursday that the boy revealed in 2008 that Betney had repeatedly sexually assaulted him two years earlier. It wasn’t until his family moved that the child felt safe enough from Betney to tell what had happened, Usry said.
Betney’s arrest on an aggravated sodomy charge was delayed until February because he had moved out of state, Usry said. According to court records, Betney’s last address was in Villisca, Iowa.
