Arrest after fight, cop attack at River Glen

  • Follow Crime & courts

One person has been arrested after a shooting and an assault Tuesday on an officer at River Glen Apartments.

According to Richmond County sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Vinson, several people were fighting at the apartment complex on East Boundary and Telfair Street shortly before 6 p.m.

Police said Michael McCorkle, 20, who was involved in the fight, entered a vehicle and began shooting.

Vinson said no one was injured in the shooting.

Deputies arrived at the scene and located McCorkle. Vinson said McCorkle fought the deputy after the officer found a gun in the suspect’s waistband.

Additional officers were called to the scene after several people joined the fight in an attempt to help McCorkle escape.

Officers were able to recover the firearm and arrest McCorkle, who was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm by a first offender, theft by receiving stolen property and two counts of aggravated assault.

Police said those who attempted to help McCorkle escape quickly fled the area and have not been arrested.

Now isn't that an interesting article. No, I don't mean the usual shooting and fighting in River Glen. That's just a "dog bites man story".

No, I'm talking about the fine, upstanding citizens of that neighborhood who came to the deputy's aid and attempted to assist him in his struggle with the armed felon.

Not!

We always hear that there are good people in these neighborhoods and that it's just a few bad apples who are giving the rest a bad name.

Really? Where are they?

I posted earlier, You will never stop or rid Augusta of it's inherited culture because that is what they want and will even do anything to protect it. It is a waste of time and money to get involved until such time the good element of that culture says they will help.

Cobalt George what are we supposed to do?

What are we supposed to do, Cobalt George, lay down and give up? I'm sorry, we can't do that. We refuse to give up. We have a right to fight for what is ours, what we've worked for, what we believe in, and protect our life, limb and property. We are at war with criminals, their accessories to their crimes, their co-dependents and their enablers. There are decent, hard-working, law-abiding people living and working here. We would like to be able to exercise, recreate, entertain and enjoy our communities here, too! We are American first, sharing diverse cultures and we take care of our homes and property. We contribute to our community in too many ways to count. We bring intelligence, skill academics, art and other talents to our community. We are not EXPENDABLE!

How would you like to be the RCSO deputy...

riding alone in a RCSO cruiser as s/he patrols River Glen Apartments during the course of his/her regular 12-hour shift?

Who would like to trade places with a decent, God-fearing parent who is trying to rear his/her kids in River Glen Apartments?

I would rather have read

I would rather have read "several other people were killed when they tried to free McCorkle".

" You will never stop or rid Augusta of it's inherited culture because that is what they want and will even do anything to protect it."

Exactly CG. Circumstances have rendered Augusta pretty much hopeless and the only people who can do anything about it have the same mentality as the bystanders that jumped on the cop.

This area looks like a third

This area looks like a third world country. They don't respect themselves, so why would the respect the police. Glad to see the officer was not injured. Send the entire force in and clean house.

If Good outnumber the Bad,

If Good outnumber the Bad, why hasn't there been any improvement in the past years?

As a matter of fact, it is getting worst every day.

What has prevented an improvement in Augusta and throughout this great country is POLITICAL CORRECTNESS"

When you have officers
Unpublished

When you have officers assigned to different districts evry day it is almost impossible for them to recognize anyone. Lets get back to basics of beat cops who are assigned to a specific neighborhood for their entire career. And with all the GPS cell phones and radios they have why doers something like this happen? This happens because we have so many different little fiefdoms in the sheriffs office that sound very cute, but take away from their ability to patrol. BTW is the department still using less than 50 percent of on hand assets for patrol? Who is in charge?

Cobalt George,

What has prevented improvement in Augusta and in the USA as a whole is not political correctness but a pervasive lack of moral courage.

Tactics

First, send in a unit of social workers and see how they fare.
Second, send in local law enforcement and see how they fare.
Third, send in the National Guard to round up the innocent people.
Fourth, set up a perimeter to keep the vermin in.
Fifth, launch the mortars.
Sixth, rebuild for the good people that had to endure this mess.

jake, why use mortars????? as soon as the 1st round hits the rats, roaches and other vermin will scatter and possibly escape. better to use vx nerve gas, they can run but they can't hide, nor are they able to hold their breath for any lenght of time, a quick and painful death to rats, roaches, and vermin.

The "good people" aren't that

The "good people" aren't that "good". I'm telling you, I've spoken and dealt with hundreds of those "good' people, and, when you get down to the nitty-gritty, they expose themselves for truly believing how they "deserve" whatever it is they can get! Not long ago, I spoke with a woman who bragged about how involved she is with church and charities...like the Angel Food ministries. After awhile, I found out she would purposely put aside food that was to go to the needy people who would come, and then she would take home those "left overs" for herself! She would see teenagers smoking pot and doing drugs in her next door neighbor's back yard (the neighbor was gone to work and none of the teenager's belonged there), and she would just close the blinds and act like she didn't see anything. She would brag about going to the Southside IGA and buying bootleg movie videos! She even told me she could get me some "hot" electronics from someone she knows! I asked her if she gave her preacher the same deal, and she shut up. See what I mean? They see nothing wrong with it as long as THEY benefit somehow. This is the type of people our law enforcement is dealing with. It's almost a no win situation.
