Two trials began Monday in Richmond County Superior Court, including the case of Desmond Anthony, who is charged with the Nov. 28, 2010, murder of 20-year-old Samuel Carroll Jr.
Investigators found Carroll’s body along a path near the north side of Building 1 of Fairway Village Apartments on Richmond Hill Road just after 9 p.m. Jamar Woodard, a witness who called 911, testified Monday that it was a drug deal that ended in gunfire.
Anthony is charged with two counts of murder, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and criminal attempt to commit armed robbery.
Also Monday, jurors heard evidence in the case of Desmond Coley, who is charged with hijacking a motor vehicle, armed robbery, kidnapping, possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm by a first offender.
An indictment says he used a .357 Magnum to steal a Cadillac SRX from James Watkins on Dec. 15, 2011. Assistant District Attorney Sam Nicholson said in his opening statement that deputies found Coley hiding in a water heater closet at a nearby apartment complex. The car keys were found on top of the water heater. Nicholson said.
