Goff, 24, of the 4400 block of Reynolds Street in Hephzibah, was taken into custody after Tiffany Nicole Salter, 22, was found dead in a wooded area behind his home.
Investigators said Goff had called his mother earlier and told her that he and Salter had fought and that he had choked her. His mother called 911, deputies said.
Richmond County sheriff’s deputies and Hephzibah police arrived shortly before 7 a.m. and found Salter unresponsive.
Goff scuffled with deputies before being taken into custody, a police statement said.
Salter is Richmond County’s 18th homicide of 2012.
